Limiting sugar before age two linked to better brain health

A new study suggests that limiting sugar consumption in the first two years of life may be tied to better cognitive function in adulthood. Researchers analyzed data from a long-term health project, comparing people who grew up during a period of sugar rationing with those who did not. The findings indicate that those who had restricted sugar intake as infants and toddlers performed better on memory and reasoning tests decades later.

The study, published in a scientific journal, looked at individuals born in the United Kingdom around the time of World War II. During and after the war, sugar was rationed, meaning young children ate far less of it than is common today. When rationing ended in 1953, sugar consumption jumped sharply. The researchers found that people conceived and born during the rationing period showed lower risks of diabetes and high blood pressure, and also scored higher on cognitive assessments in their 60s and 70s.

However, the evidence is not conclusive. The study is observational, meaning it can show a link but cannot prove that less sugar directly causes better brain health. Other factors, such as overall diet quality and lifestyle changes after the war, could also play a role. Experts caution that while the findings are interesting, they do not provide a clear recommendation for parents beyond the general advice to avoid added sugars for very young children. The takeaway is that early nutrition matters, but more research is needed to confirm a direct cause-and-effect relationship with brain health.
