Measles Cases Surge Past Last Year's Total as Outbreak Expands

Measles infections in the United States have climbed to more than double the number recorded last year, with the outbreak continuing to spread across multiple states. Pennsylvania is the worst hit state, with at least 1,338 cases of measles confirmed in 44 counties so far this year, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The sharp rise has alarmed public health officials, who note that measles is one of the most contagious viruses known and can spread rapidly among people who are unvaccinated. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left a room, making containment difficult in schools, workplaces, and other crowded settings.

Symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads across the body. In some cases, measles leads to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, and hospitalization, particularly among young children and adults with weakened immune systems.

Health departments in affected states are working to trace contacts and urge vaccination. Officials stress that two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine offer strong protection and remain the most effective tool for slowing the outbreak. They are also asking people who suspect they may be infected to call ahead before visiting a clinic so staff can take precautions to avoid exposing others.

The current surge underscores how quickly progress against preventable diseases can erode when vaccination rates fall. Public health experts say the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the outbreak can be brought under control or continues to widen into new communities.
