A new artificial intelligence system called EchoNext has received FDA clearance, allowing doctors to screen patients for hidden structural heart diseases using a standard EKG. The tool is being integrated into the OpenEvidence platform, giving clinicians a fast way to spot conditions that often go undetected until they become serious.
EchoNext works by analyzing the electrical signals from a routine electrocardiogram. It looks for subtle patterns that suggest problems like weakened heart muscle, valve issues, or thickened heart walls. These conditions are common but frequently missed because they do not always cause obvious symptoms early on. Traditional diagnosis often requires an echocardiogram or an MRI, which are not always available during a regular checkup.
With EchoNext, a doctor can run the screening during a standard office visit. If the AI flags a potential issue, the patient can be referred for more advanced imaging. The goal is to catch problems sooner, when treatment is more effective.
The developers say the tool was trained on millions of de-identified EKG records and validated against actual echocardiogram results. Early studies showed it could identify structural heart disease with a high degree of accuracy, reducing the number of missed cases.
OpenEvidence plans to roll out EchoNext to its network of healthcare providers over the coming months. The company expects the tool to be especially useful in primary care settings, where access to specialist imaging is limited. For now, the system is designed as a screening aid, not a replacement for a full cardiac workup. Doctors will still need to confirm any findings with standard diagnostic tests.
