Chipotle Mexican Grill confirmed Tuesday that it has removed jalapenos from a portion of its restaurants, following concerns that the peppers may be connected to a salmonella outbreak currently under review by public health officials. The company said the decision was made after internal checks pointed to the possibility that the produce could be linked to the ongoing cases.
The move affects an unspecified number of locations, and Chipotle stressed that the action was precautionary. The chain said it is cooperating fully with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration as they trace the source of the illness. So far, the outbreak has been reported in several states, though officials have not yet confirmed a single food item as the definitive cause.
Chipotle noted that it regularly evaluates its supply chain and has protocols in place to respond quickly to food safety concerns. The company said it has already switched to an alternative source for jalapenos in the affected restaurants and expects no major disruption to menu availability. Customers who have purchased items containing jalapenos in recent weeks and experienced symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, or stomach cramps are advised to contact their healthcare provider.
The investigation remains active, and further updates are expected as testing continues. Chipotle said it will keep the public informed if any additional steps are needed.
