This NYC LGBTQ+ health clinic is giving away the ultimate Pride Month survival kit

A New York City health clinic is marking Pride Month by handing out free survival kits to the LGBTQ+ community, stocked with HIV prevention medication, sexual health supplies, and overdose reversal drugs. Callen-Lorde, a primary care center focused on LGBTQ+ health, launched the initiative to address ongoing disparities in access to preventive care and harm reduction tools.

The kits include doses of PrEP and PEP, the daily and emergency pills that prevent HIV infection, as well as condoms and lubricant. More critically, each package contains naloxone, the nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose. Clinic officials said the decision to include naloxone reflects the overlapping crises of substance use and HIV risk, particularly among transgender people and queer people of color.

"We know that Pride is a time of celebration, but it is also a time when people need real, tangible support," a clinic spokesperson said. "These kits remove barriers. You do not need an appointment, insurance, or even an ID to get one."

The giveaway runs throughout June at Callen-Lorde's main location in Chelsea and at various community events across the city. Staff members are also distributing fentanyl test strips and information on where to access mental health services. The clinic has long served as a safety net for uninsured and underinsured patients, and this effort is part of a broader push to make life-saving tools as easy to get as a parade T-shirt.

While many Pride events focus on visibility and corporate sponsorships, Callen-Lorde's approach is rooted in direct care. The kits are meant to be used, not just carried. For people who struggle to afford medication or fear judgment from other providers, the clinic offers a rare point of entry. Organizers hope the program will continue beyond June if funding allows.
