Cyclospora season winds down, even as Texas cases linked to outbreak

Cyclospora season winds down, even as Texas cases linked to outbreak

The annual summer surge of cyclospora infections is finally winding down, but health officials in Texas are still piecing together a cluster of cases linked to contaminated lettuce. The parasite, which causes severe diarrhea and flu-like symptoms, typically peaks between May and August, and this year was no exception. However, the tail end of the season has brought a fresh wave of attention to a specific outbreak that has now been traced back to a common leafy green.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, at least a dozen recent infections have been genetically matched to a strain previously identified in bagged lettuce sold at major grocery chains. While the initial recall was issued weeks ago, the slow onset of symptoms, which can take up to two weeks to appear, means that new cases are still being reported even as the overall transmission window closes. Most patients have recovered without hospitalization, but public health experts warn that the parasite is especially dangerous for those with weakened immune systems.

The timing is unusual, as cyclospora activity normally drops sharply after September. This year's extended pattern likely reflects a contaminated batch that remained in cold storage or on shelves longer than expected. Officials advise anyone who experienced prolonged watery stools, cramping, or nausea in the past month to consult a doctor, especially if they remember eating pre-washed salads. Testing for cyclospora requires a specific stool sample request, so patients should mention potential exposure to lettuce when seeking care. With cooler weather approaching, the risk is now low, but the reminder stands: always rinse produce thoroughly, even when labels claim it is pre-washed.
