Former Rams Star Lawrence McCutcheon Passes Away at 76

Lawrence McCutcheon, a five-time Pro Bowl running back and longtime Los Angeles Rams executive, died at 76 after a battle with Parkinson's disease.

McCutcheon spent nine seasons with the Rams after joining the team in 1972 as a third-round draft pick out of Colorado State. He quickly established himself as one of the most productive backs in franchise history, rushing for over 1,000 yards in five consecutive seasons from 1973 to 1977. His consistent output helped power Los Angeles to five straight NFC West titles during that stretch.

He finished his Rams career with 6,186 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns, adding another 2,523 yards receiving. At the time of his retirement, he ranked among the franchise's all-time leaders in several rushing categories. His durability and vision made him a reliable focal point of the offense during an era when the Rams were perennial contenders.

After his playing days ended, McCutcheon remained with the organization in various front office roles, including director of player personnel. He was inducted into the Rams Ring of Honor in 2013.

Teammates and colleagues remembered him as a steady presence whose contributions extended well beyond the field. He is survived by his family and a legacy that shaped the franchise for decades.
