A new 10-bed unit is set to open with the goal of addressing serious shortfalls in mental health care for young people in North Carolina's juvenile detention system. The facility will provide intensive treatment to adolescents with acute behavioral health needs who have had difficulty securing placement in other facilities.
The unit is designed for youth whose conditions are too severe for standard detention settings but who do not qualify for existing psychiatric programs. Many of these young people have cycled through emergency rooms and temporary placements while waiting for appropriate care, a pattern that officials say leaves both the youth and staff at risk.
Staffing will include mental health clinicians, nurses and trained direct-care workers, with the aim of stabilizing residents and connecting them to longer-term services. The model emphasizes structured routines, therapy and close supervision in a setting that can respond to crises quickly.
Advocates have long argued that detention centers are not equipped to serve as psychiatric providers, and that the shortage of beds has forced courts and caseworkers into difficult choices. Supporters of the new unit say it offers a middle path, keeping young people close to their communities while giving them access to treatment.
Officials expect the unit to begin accepting residents in the coming months, with referrals coming through the state's juvenile justice system.
