Essentia Health staff, community partners, local leaders, and elected officials gathered Wednesday, May 20, to break ground on a new emergency department at Essentia Health-Virginia. The ceremony marked the official start of construction on a $13 million project designed to improve the patient experience and strengthen emergency care on the Iron Range.
The new facility will replace the current emergency department, which has served the community for decades. Officials say the updated space will feature larger treatment rooms, improved patient flow, and modern equipment to handle a growing number of visits. The project also aims to reduce wait times and provide a more comfortable environment for patients and their families.
Construction is expected to take about 18 months, with the new emergency department slated to open in late 2026. During that time, the existing emergency services will continue to operate without interruption. Hospital administrators emphasized that the investment reflects a long-term commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of the region, which has seen increased demand for emergency and trauma care.
Local leaders praised the project as a critical upgrade for the Iron Range, noting that access to high-quality emergency services is essential for the safety and well-being of the community. The new department will also create construction jobs and support local economic activity during the build.
