Sanford Health has released a sweeping master plan that sketches out decades of potential growth for its main campus in central Sioux Falls, offering a glimpse of what the area could become over the next half-century. The plan is not a fixed blueprint but rather a flexible framework, with officials emphasizing that it is meant to guide conversation rather than lock in specific projects.
"We are having conversations about 25, 40, 50 years and what that could look like," a Sanford representative said, noting that the document is designed to adapt as healthcare needs and community priorities shift. The possibilities laid out are vast, ranging from new clinical towers and expanded research facilities to improved public spaces, pedestrian pathways, and better connections between existing buildings.
The master plan also considers how the campus might integrate more seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhoods, including potential changes to traffic flow, parking structures, and green areas. While no construction timeline has been set, the vision signals that Sanford sees its central location as a long-term anchor for growth, rather than a site to be abandoned for suburban development.
Community members are being invited to review the concept and offer input, though no formal public hearings have been scheduled yet. For now, the plan serves as a starting point for what could be one of the largest healthcare expansions in the region's history, with the understanding that any actual building will happen in phases over many years.
