A representative for the family of detained US citizen Marc Fogel has issued a stark warning about the condition of five Americans currently held in Russian custody. Kieran Ramsey, Chief Investigative Officer for Global Reach and a former FBI hostage recovery expert, detailed the deteriorating health and alleged mistreatment of the group, arguing that all five individuals must be formally designated as wrongfully detained by the US government.

Speaking on behalf of the Gilman family, Ramsey described a dire situation, citing specific medical concerns and what he termed horrific conditions inside Russian detention facilities. He emphasized that the men are not receiving adequate care for chronic conditions and are being subjected to treatment that falls far below international standards. The group includes Fogel, a schoolteacher serving a 14-year sentence on drug charges, along with others whose cases have received less public attention.

Ramsey stressed that the formal wrongful detention designation is not merely symbolic. It would unlock dedicated resources from the US government, including the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, which would then be tasked with negotiating their release. Without that status, he argued, the cases do not receive the full weight of diplomatic and intelligence efforts. He called on the administration to act swiftly, warning that delays could have fatal consequences given the reported decline in the detainees' physical state. The appeal adds fresh urgency to a complex diplomatic issue that has seen previous prisoner exchanges between Washington and Moscow.
