France recorded a sharp 29% increase in deaths during the hottest week of last month's unprecedented heat wave, according to the country's public health agency. The spike in mortality came as temperatures shattered previous records across much of the nation, with some areas experiencing extreme heat for days on end.
The health agency's report, released this week, analyzed data from the week of July 17-23, when thermometers in several regions topped 40 degrees Celsius. Officials noted that the surge was particularly pronounced among older adults, though younger age groups also saw elevated death rates. The agency attributed the rise to the direct effects of heatstroke and dehydration, as well as the worsening of pre-existing conditions like heart and respiratory illnesses.
This heat wave, which followed a series of similar events in recent years, has reignited concerns about France's preparedness for extreme weather linked to climate change. While the government has implemented early warning systems and opened cooling centers, critics argue that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable populations, especially in urban areas where temperatures can be significantly higher than in surrounding countryside.
The report also highlighted regional disparities, with the hardest-hit areas including southern cities like Marseille and Lyon, where the heat was most intense. Health authorities urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak hours, and check on elderly neighbors during future heat events.
