Baton Rouge General's Health Tip of the Week: How health overconfidence is hurting men

A recent survey revealed that 65% of men think they are healthier than other men. Simple math shows that cannot be true for everyone, but this misplaced confidence helps explain why many men avoid routine checkups and preventive care.

Doctors say the problem is that serious conditions often hide in plain sight. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers can develop for years without causing any obvious symptoms. A man might feel fine, lift weights regularly, or keep a busy schedule, while his arteries are quietly clogging or his blood sugar is climbing into dangerous territory.

This gap between feeling healthy and actually being healthy leads men to skip annual physicals, blood pressure screenings, and recommended cancer tests. The result is that diseases get caught later, when treatment is harder and outcomes are worse.

Health experts recommend that men stop relying on how they feel as a measure of their actual health. Simple yearly screenings can catch problems early. A blood pressure check takes two minutes. A blood test for cholesterol and glucose takes a few seconds. These small steps can prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other serious events that often strike men who thought they were perfectly fine.

The message is straightforward: feeling good does not mean everything is working right on the inside. Regular checkups are not a sign of weakness. They are the only way to know for sure.
