Alignment Healthcare Turns Profit As Insurer Gets Handle On Costs

Alignment Healthcare swung to a profit in the second quarter, with net income more than doubling to $36.6 million compared to the same period last year. The company credited better control over medical costs in its Medicare Advantage plans for the turnaround. Revenue also climbed to $737.8 million, up from $596.5 million a year earlier, driven by membership growth and higher premium rates.

The insurer's medical benefit ratio, a key measure of how much it spends on claims versus premiums, improved to 88.3% from 91.7% in the prior year quarter. That drop indicates the company is managing hospital and specialist costs more effectively, a challenge that has plagued many Medicare Advantage insurers recently. Alignment Healthcare said it benefited from tighter care coordination and lower-than-expected inpatient utilization among its members.

Chief Executive John Kao noted that the results reflect disciplined execution and a focus on high-risk populations. The company raised its full-year guidance, now expecting adjusted net income between $40 million and $50 million. Shares rose more than 10% in after-hours trading following the announcement. Analysts viewed the profit as a sign that Alignment Healthcare is gaining traction in a competitive market where larger rivals have struggled with rising costs. The company ended the quarter with about 170,000 members, up 18% year over year.
