Accrediting body considers changes to racism curriculum standards for public health schools

The main accrediting body for schools of public health is considering a significant shift in its curriculum standards, potentially removing language that explicitly mandates teaching about structural racism and bias. The Council on Education for Public Health, which reviews and accredits programs across the United States, has opened a discussion on revising its criteria after receiving feedback from member institutions.

Currently, the standards require that public health students learn how systemic factors like racism, classism, and other forms of discrimination shape health outcomes. The proposed change would replace that specific language with a broader, less prescriptive phrase, such as a general commitment to addressing social determinants of health. Supporters of the revision argue that the current wording is too narrow and politically charged, and that a more flexible approach allows schools to tailor their teaching to their local context without feeling compelled to adopt a particular ideological framework.

Opponents, however, see the move as a step backward. Faculty and student groups in several schools have pushed back, noting that public health research consistently shows that racial inequities in disease, maternal mortality, and environmental exposure are not accidental but are driven by structural policies. Removing the explicit mention of racism, they argue, could weaken accountability and dilute the field's focus on the root causes of health disparities. The council is expected to collect public comment for several months before making a final decision, which would affect all accredited programs and potentially influence how future public health professionals are trained.
