Summer Travel Health Checklist

Planning a summer trip this year? Before you pack your bags, health experts urge travelers to take a few key steps to avoid common travel illnesses. From measles prevention to food safety, here are seven essential tips to keep you feeling your best while on vacation.

First, check your vaccination status. Measles cases are rising globally, and the CDC recommends ensuring you are up to date on the MMR vaccine, especially if traveling internationally. Other routine vaccines, like those for flu or tetanus, should also be current. For certain destinations, you may need shots for hepatitis A, typhoid, or yellow fever. Visit a travel clinic at least four to six weeks before departure.

Second, practice strict hand hygiene. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based sanitizer when soap is not available. This simple habit cuts down on exposure to norovirus, colds, and other bugs.

Third, be cautious with food and water. Stick to bottled or boiled water in areas with questionable tap water. Avoid raw or undercooked meats, seafood, and unwashed fruits or vegetables. Street food can be tempting, but choose vendors that look clean and serve hot, freshly cooked items.

Fourth, protect yourself from insects. Mosquitoes can carry diseases like dengue, Zika, and malaria. Use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, and sleep under a mosquito net if needed.

Fifth, manage jet lag and fatigue. Stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, and try to adjust your sleep schedule a few days before your trip. Short naps and exposure to natural light can help reset your internal clock.

Sixth, pack a basic health kit. Include pain relievers, antihistamines, motion sickness medication, bandages, and any prescription drugs you take. Keep medications in your carry-on in case checked luggage is lost.

Finally, listen to your body. If you feel unwell, rest. Pushing through illness can ruin your trip and put others at risk. With a little planning, you can enjoy a healthy, memorable summer adventure.
