Two Paraguayan volunteers gained hands-on medical experience this week by working directly with U.S. Air Force audiologists during the AMISTAD 2026 humanitarian mission. The volunteers, both local residents, supported hearing screenings and patient care at the Unidad de Salud Familiar Niño de Jesús clinic.
The partnership allowed the volunteers to observe and assist with specialized diagnostic equipment and patient consultations. For many patients in the area, this was their first access to professional hearing tests. The volunteers helped translate instructions, comfort nervous children, and document test results.
One volunteer described the experience as a rare opportunity to learn from military specialists while serving her own community. She noted that the training she received could help her pursue a career in audiology or public health. Another volunteer said the work was demanding but rewarding, especially when seeing elderly patients hear clearly for the first time after receiving basic hearing aids.
The AMISTAD mission brings together U.S. and Paraguayan medical personnel for joint training and direct patient care. While the focus remains on service, the program also builds long-term skills for local health workers. Organizers said the volunteer component strengthens community ties and ensures that some knowledge stays behind after the mission ends. The clinic will continue to offer follow-up care with the equipment and methods introduced during the visit.
