The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Western Massachusetts brought the community together on Sunday for its 26th annual walkathon at Stanley Park in Westfield. The event, which drew hundreds of participants, aimed to raise crucial funds for mental health programs and support services across the region.
Walkers of all ages circled the park's paths under sunny skies, carrying signs with messages of hope and solidarity. Many participants wore matching T-shirts in honor of loved ones affected by mental health conditions. The atmosphere was both festive and purposeful, with live music and resource tables set up along the route.
Organizers reported that this year's walkathon exceeded its fundraising goal, though final totals are still being tallied. The money will go toward NAMI's free programs, including support groups, educational classes, and a helpline for families in crisis. "Every step taken here today represents a step toward breaking the stigma," said one volunteer coordinator.
The event also featured speakers who shared personal stories of recovery and resilience. Local businesses donated food and water for walkers, and volunteers managed registration and route safety. For many attendees, the walkathon is an annual tradition that reinforces the message that no one should face mental health challenges alone. NAMI Western Mass plans to continue its outreach efforts throughout the year, with the walkathon serving as a key fundraising pillar.
