Florida State University is taking its speech and hearing services on the road. The College of Communication and Information, through its School of Communication Science and Disorders, has launched a new mobile clinic under the FSU Health banner. The unit is designed to bring diagnostic and therapeutic care directly to underserved communities across the region.
The mobile clinic is equipped with soundproof testing booths, audiology equipment, and therapy materials. It will allow licensed clinicians and graduate students to offer hearing screenings, speech-language evaluations, and follow-up treatment in areas that lack easy access to these services. University officials say the goal is to close the gap in rural and low-income neighborhoods where residents often travel long distances for care.
The initiative also serves as a hands-on training platform for students. They will work under supervision to gain real-world experience while providing a public service. The clinic is expected to visit schools, community centers, and senior living facilities. FSU Health leaders emphasize that early detection of speech and hearing issues can significantly improve outcomes for children and older adults alike. The mobile unit represents a practical step toward making allied health services more equitable and accessible.
