The European Medicines Agency has recommended authorizing Moderna's innovative two-in-one vaccine, designed to protect against both seasonal influenza and COVID-19. This endorsement marks a significant milestone as the first such combined mRNA vaccine to reach this stage in the European Union.
The vaccine, known as mRNA-1083, targets the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB.1.5 variant alongside four strains of seasonal influenza. This streamlined approach aims to simplify vaccination campaigns, potentially boosting public uptake by reducing the number of required injections. The EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use concluded that the vaccine's benefits outweigh its risks, citing robust data from clinical trials.
This positive opinion paves the way for the European Commission to grant final marketing authorization across the EU member states. If approved, the combined shot could be available for upcoming autumn and winter vaccination seasons. Health officials hope this convenient option will strengthen community protection against two major respiratory viruses simultaneously, easing the burden on healthcare systems. The final decision from the European Commission is anticipated in the coming weeks.
