The annual cyclospora infection season in Texas is showing a late but sharp surge, with state health officials now reporting more than 500 confirmed cases and 71 hospitalizations across the state. The numbers mark a significant jump from earlier this month, when the count hovered around 400. While the peak of the season typically arrives in late summer, authorities say they expect the current wave to taper off by early September, though they caution that reporting delays could push the final tally higher.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal illness, often linked to contaminated fresh produce imported from tropical regions. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, and fatigue, and can last for weeks if untreated. Health officials have not yet identified a single common food source for this year's outbreak, but they are urging clinicians to test specifically for the parasite, as standard stool exams often miss it.
