Scented candles are a common household item, but questions about their health effects have grown as more people burn them regularly. Experts say the answer depends on what the candle is made of, how often it is used, and how well the space is ventilated.
Most concerns center on what candles release when they burn. Paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct, can emit small amounts of chemicals such as toluene and benzene. Scented candles also release soot and fine particles that can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, especially in people with asthma or allergies. Heavy use in small, closed rooms can make these effects worse.
Not all candles carry the same risk. Soy, beeswax, and other plant-based waxes tend to burn cleaner, and cotton or wooden wicks produce less soot than metal-core wicks. Experts recommend choosing candles with simple scents, since strong synthetic fragrances may release more volatile compounds.
The broader consensus is that occasional use is unlikely to cause harm for most people. Moderation and ventilation are key: burn candles in well-aired rooms, keep wicks trimmed, and avoid leaving them lit for hours. Anyone with respiratory conditions should pay attention to how they feel and limit exposure if symptoms appear.
