Annenberg poll: Americans trust their doctors when it comes to public health, but not FDA, CDC

A fresh survey from the Annenberg Public Policy Center shows a clear split in how Americans view health guidance. Most people still trust their personal physicians for medical advice, but confidence in federal agencies like the FDA and CDC has fallen noticeably during President Trump's second term.

The poll, released this week, found that roughly three out of four adults say they trust their own doctor a great deal or a fair amount. That number has stayed steady over the past few years. But when asked about the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, trust levels dropped by double digits compared to earlier in the administration. Only about half of respondents now express similar confidence in those agencies.

Researchers point to a mix of factors behind the decline. Political messaging, high-profile vaccine debates, and shifting public health guidance have all played a role. The survey also noted that trust gaps are wider among certain groups, particularly younger adults and those who identify as independents or Republicans.

Despite the drop, most people still say they follow basic health advice, like getting flu shots or washing hands regularly. The findings suggest that while federal agencies have lost some credibility, the doctor-patient relationship remains a reliable channel for public health information. Experts say rebuilding trust in national agencies will take time and clearer communication, especially during health emergencies.
