Oregon health officials have confirmed two new public exposure sites for measles in Salem, raising concerns about the continued spread of the highly contagious virus. The locations identified are Salem Hospital’s Immediate Care clinic and its Family Medicine clinic.
Individuals who were at the Immediate Care clinic on February 27 between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. may have been exposed. A second potential exposure occurred at the Family Medicine clinic on February 29 between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Health authorities are urging anyone who was present at these locations during the specified times to take immediate precautions.
Officials advise potentially exposed individuals to review their immunization records to confirm measles vaccination status. Those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their immunity should contact a healthcare provider promptly. Symptoms of measles typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinctive red rash several days later. The virus can remain airborne in a space for up to two hours after an infected person has left.
Public health leaders emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles. They are working to notify anyone who may be at risk and to prevent further community transmission.
