Three critical environmental projects in Routt County have received a significant boost from a local conservation fund. The grants target pressing ecological challenges: combating invasive weeds, improving river health, and aiding forest recovery after wildfires.
The first project will focus on managing invasive oxeye daisy on working ranchlands, preventing the aggressive weed from degrading vital wildlife habitat and agricultural soils. A second initiative aims to enhance the health of the Elk River through comprehensive riparian restoration. This work is crucial for stabilizing banks, improving water quality, and supporting aquatic ecosystems.
The third grant supports post-fire forest recovery in the area burned by the 2021 Morgan Creek Fire. Funds will assist with the collection of native conifer seeds, a first step toward re-establishing a healthy, resilient forest canopy in the burned landscape.
Officials stated that these strategic investments address immediate conservation needs while promoting long-term ecological balance. The projects, undertaken by local organizations and landowners, reflect a community-wide commitment to stewarding the region’s natural resources for future generations and the wildlife that depend on them.
