We're lifting our price target on Cardinal Health after issuing rosy profit guidance

Cardinal Health's latest earnings report came with a few rough edges, but the bottom line tells the story investors care about. The company issued upbeat profit guidance for the coming year, and that was enough for us to raise our price target on the stock.

The quarter itself had some messy spots, mostly around revenue mix and a couple of one-off items. But the core distribution business held up well, and management's confidence in future earnings is hard to ignore. They now expect adjusted operating earnings to land meaningfully above prior forecasts, driven by stronger pharmaceutical segment margins and better cost control.

That shift in tone matters. For a company that has spent years fighting margin pressure in its main drug distribution arm, a clear signal that profitability is improving is a big deal. The guidance suggests the company is finally seeing the payoff from contract renegotiations and efficiency moves.

We are not pretending the quarter was perfect. There were still headwinds in the medical segment, and cash flow came in a bit lighter than some hoped. But when a company raises its profit outlook this decisively, the market tends to focus on the trajectory, not the noise.

Our revised price target reflects that improved earnings power. We see room for multiple expansion if the company keeps delivering on this path. The risk is that guidance proves too optimistic, but given the visibility management has into its contracts, we are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

For now, Cardinal Health looks like a steadier ship than it did a few months ago. The stock may not be a screaming bargain anymore, but the earnings momentum justifies a higher valuation. We would hold what you have and consider adding on any pullback.
