Survey shows Americans want to start brain health habits earlier

A new national survey suggests that most U.S. adults think brain health routines should begin earlier than many people actually start them. The research, commissioned by a major academic medical center, asked more than 1,000 people about their views on cognitive wellness. The results show that the majority believe habits like regular exercise, good sleep, and mental stimulation should be in place before age 40.

However, the same survey found a gap between belief and action. Many respondents admitted they did not start focusing on brain health until their 50s or later, often after noticing memory slips or other changes. Experts say this delay is common but unnecessary. The brain, like the rest of the body, responds well to early care. Simple steps such as staying socially active, managing stress, and eating a balanced diet can make a difference long before any problems appear.

The survey also highlighted that people are more aware than ever of conditions like Alzheimer's disease and dementia. That awareness is driving a desire to act sooner. But knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. Doctors suggest starting small. A daily walk, a new hobby, or a consistent bedtime can all support long-term cognitive health. The key, they say, is not waiting for a wake-up call.
