Second person dies in Upper East Side Legionnaires' disease outbreak

A second person has died in connection with the Legionnaires' disease outbreak centered on Manhattan's Upper East Side, health officials confirmed Tuesday. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported that the latest fatality brings the total number of deaths to two since the cluster was first identified last month. Nine other individuals remain hospitalized as of the latest update, though officials noted that some patients are showing signs of improvement.

The outbreak has so far sickened at least 24 people, all of whom are believed to have been exposed to the Legionella bacteria in the neighborhood. Health investigators have been testing cooling towers and water systems in the area, as these are common sources for the bacteria to aerosolize and spread. The department has not yet identified a single source, but has ordered several buildings to disinfect their water infrastructure as a precaution.

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella. It is not contagious between people. Those at highest risk include older adults, smokers, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The health department continues to urge anyone with symptoms such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing to seek medical attention promptly.
