For years, residents in the city of Rensselaer have raised concerns about their health and their children's health because of the proximity of the Dunn landfill. On Wednesday, a coalition of community groups and local advocates brought those fears directly to the state Health Commission, demanding action and transparency.
The landfill, which has been a source of contention for decades, sits near homes and schools. Residents have reported higher than average rates of respiratory issues, headaches, and other ailments they believe are linked to the site. The coalition presented testimony and data they say shows a pattern of neglect and a lack of proper monitoring by state agencies.
"We are not scientists, but we know when our kids are sick more often than they should be," one parent told the commission. The group is calling for an independent health study, not one funded or controlled by the landfill's operators. They also want regular air and water testing results made public in a way that is easy for the community to understand.
The Health Commission listened to the testimony but did not make any immediate decisions. Members said they would review the information and consider next steps. For the residents of Rensselaer, the wait continues, but they say this is the loudest their voices have been heard in years.
