Dutch technology investor Prosus, known for its large stake in Tencent and ownership of Just Eat Takeaway, is putting 400 million euros into the French health insurance startup Alan. The deal lifts Alan's valuation to roughly 6.3 billion dollars, marking a significant step for the company as it expands beyond its home market.
Alan started as a digital health insurer in France, offering simple, app-based plans for individuals and small businesses. Over time, it has added services like telemedicine, mental health support, and pharmacy discounts. The company says it now covers more than 700,000 members across France, Spain, Belgium, and Germany.
The new funding will go toward product development and international growth. Alan plans to launch in the Netherlands and Italy next, with an eye on eventually entering the United Kingdom. The company also wants to build out its artificial intelligence tools for claims processing and customer support.
Prosus has been increasing its bets on European tech startups, especially in healthcare and financial services. The firm sees Alan as a strong fit because of its focus on technology-driven efficiency and its steady membership growth. Alan's revenue has climbed sharply in recent years, though the company remains unprofitable as it invests heavily in expansion.
The deal is expected to close in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval.
