Incarcerated individuals in Washington State now have a direct lifeline to mental health support. The state has officially expanded access to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for people held in its prisons, a move aimed at addressing a long-standing gap in care for a vulnerable population.
Previously, inmates experiencing a mental health crisis had limited options, often relying on correctional staff to recognize the problem and initiate a response. Now, they can dial 988 from prison phones. When they do, the call is routed to a trained crisis counselor who is specifically prepared to handle calls from correctional facilities. These counselors are trained to immediately contact the prison's security and medical teams to get direct, on-site support for the caller if they are at an imminent risk of hurting themselves.
The program required coordination between the state's Department of Corrections and the crisis hotline network. Officials say the goal is to reduce the stigma of seeking help inside prison walls and to provide a faster, more compassionate response than the standard emergency protocols. For many incarcerated people, the simple act of speaking to someone who is not a guard or a prison administrator can be a critical first step toward de-escalation. The state hopes this access will lead to fewer suicide attempts and better long-term mental health outcomes for those serving time.
