New York, NY - NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue has finished a major renovation of its emergency department CT imaging suite, a project costing $7 million. The upgrade is designed to speed up diagnosis and treatment for some of the city's most critical patients.
The new suite features two state-of-the-art CT scanners. One is a dual-source scanner that can capture images of a beating heart in under a second, which is a big help for trauma patients and those with chest pain. The other is a wide-bore scanner that can accommodate larger patients and reduce feelings of claustrophobia. Both machines use advanced software to lower radiation exposure.
Hospital officials say the old equipment was over a decade old and could not keep up with the volume of patients. Bellevue's emergency department sees over 100,000 visits a year, including many complex cases from the city's trauma system. The new setup includes a dedicated patient holding area and a separate control room, which improves workflow and allows staff to manage multiple scans more efficiently.
The project also involved upgrading the electrical and HVAC systems to support the new machines. Construction was completed on schedule without any major disruptions to emergency services. The hospital expects the new suite to reduce wait times for scans and help doctors make faster decisions on life-saving treatments.
