GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. -- A recent event in northern Michigan aimed to shine a light on a crisis that hits the construction industry especially hard. The Hike for Hope brought together workers, families, and local businesses to raise funds for mental health resources on job sites. Organizers say the goal is to break the stigma that keeps many workers from seeking help.
Every year, more than 5,000 construction workers die by suicide. That rate is nearly double the average for working men across all industries. Long hours, physical strain, seasonal layoffs, and a culture that often prizes toughness over talking all contribute to the problem. The hike was not just a fundraiser. It was a chance for people in the trades to see that they are not alone.
Participants walked a course through the northern Michigan woods, carrying signs with messages of support. Some wore hard hats decorated with names of colleagues lost to suicide. Money raised will go toward training foremen and supervisors to spot warning signs and connect workers with counselors. Local contractors also pledged to post crisis hotline numbers on every job board.
For many in attendance, the event was personal. One carpenter said he lost two coworkers in the past three years. He called the hike a small step toward a bigger change. The hope is that by talking openly about mental health, the industry can start saving lives instead of just building structures.
