NC raids rural health fund for children’s hospital, setting up debate over future healthcare dollars

A new state budget agreement that directs more money to a children's hospital in Apex is pulling funds from a long-stalled rural health program. That program was originally designed to build health centers in underserved areas, including Wilson, but has seen little progress for years.

The move has ignited a debate over how the state should prioritize its healthcare dollars. Supporters of the children's hospital say the funding is urgently needed to expand pediatric services in a growing region. They argue that the rural health initiative had failed to deliver results, leaving millions of dollars sitting unused.

Critics, however, see the shift as a broken promise to rural communities. The rural health fund was created to address a shortage of medical facilities in eastern North Carolina, where residents often travel long distances for basic care.
