Maryland health officials reported a total of 27 measles cases since July 15, confirming that every single infection occurred in someone who had not been vaccinated. The latest update, released Wednesday, adds 14 new cases to the tally, prompting the state to officially declare an outbreak across three counties.

The affected areas include Howard, Montgomery, and Frederick counties, where the majority of cases have been concentrated. State epidemiologists said that all patients either refused vaccination or had no record of receiving the MMR shot. No public exposure sites have been identified, meaning the virus is likely spreading through private gatherings or household contacts.

Measles is highly contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red rash. Complications can be severe, especially in young children and pregnant women, including pneumonia and brain swelling.

Health officials are urging residents to check their vaccination status, particularly before traveling or attending large events. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective, with two doses providing about 97 percent protection. The outbreak comes as national vaccination rates have dipped slightly in recent years, raising concerns among public health experts.

The state is working with local clinics to offer free catch-up shots and is reminding parents that school entry requirements include measles vaccination unless a valid medical or religious exemption is on file.
