Hot days ahead in WNC: Health official urges caution as outdoor crews take precautions

With temperatures forecast to climb into the upper 80s and low 90s over the next several days, health officials in western North Carolina are reminding residents and outdoor workers to take the heat seriously. The region is bracing for a stretch of hot, humid weather that could push heat index values even higher, making conditions feel more oppressive than the actual thermometer reading.

Local health leaders are urging people to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and avoid strenuous activity during the peak afternoon hours. They are especially concerned about those who work outside, including construction crews, landscapers, and utility workers, who have little choice but to be out in the elements. Many of these teams are already adjusting their schedules, starting earlier in the morning and wrapping up before the hottest part of the day.

One construction supervisor in Buncombe County said his crew is rotating shifts and keeping a cooler full of water on every site. He noted that heat exhaustion can sneak up quickly, so they are watching each other for signs of dizziness, nausea, or confusion. Health officials echo that advice, saying it is important to check on neighbors, especially older adults and those without air conditioning.

The heat is expected to ease slightly by the weekend, but the next few days will require caution. Officials recommend wearing light clothing, using sunscreen, and never leaving children or pets in parked cars.
