High Medical Prices Are Crushing American Businesses

High Medical Prices Are Crushing American Businesses

Workers and employers are drowning in their health insurance premiums. The reason for that deluge: the health care industry's high and inscrutable prices.

For years, the cost of medical care in the United States has climbed far faster than wages or general inflation. Hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and other providers set prices that few patients or purchasers can understand, let alone negotiate. Employers, who cover a large share of insurance costs, feel the squeeze most directly. Every dollar added to a premium is a dollar that cannot go toward hiring, raises, or expansion.

Small businesses suffer disproportionately. Unlike large corporations, they lack the leverage to bargain for better rates. Many end up offering thinner coverage or shifting more costs onto employees. Workers, in turn, face higher deductibles and copays, even as their paychecks barely move.

The problem is not simply that care costs a lot. It is that prices are opaque and vary wildly for the same service. Without transparency or real competition, there is little pressure to bring costs down. Until that changes, the burden will keep growing for the businesses and families that keep the economy running.
