Thousands of medical professionals across Germany took to the streets on Tuesday to protest government proposals for significant budget reductions in the healthcare system. The demonstrations, organized by unions and medical associations, saw doctors, nurses, and hospital staff gathering in major cities including Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. Protesters carried signs reading "Patients before Profits" and "Hands Off Our Healthcare," voicing their opposition to plans they say will worsen patient care and increase workloads.
The German government has defended the proposed cuts as necessary to curb what it calls spiraling costs within the public health insurance system. Officials argue that without these measures, the system faces financial instability that could lead to higher premiums for citizens. However, healthcare workers counter that the cuts will result in longer waiting times, reduced staffing levels, and the closure of smaller clinics, particularly in rural areas. "We are already stretched thin," said one nurse at the Berlin rally. "These cuts will break the system, not fix it."
In a separate development, a World War II-era bomb was discovered during construction work in the city of Cologne, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents from their homes. Bomb disposal experts safely defused the device later in the day, and no injuries were reported. Authorities allowed residents to return by evening, though the incident briefly disrupted local traffic and train services. The discovery of unexploded ordnance from the war remains a common occurrence in Germany, with dozens of such bombs found each year.
