Health authorities in Fulton County have confirmed that a student at Johns Creek High School has been diagnosed with an active case of tuberculosis. Officials are now working to notify staff, students, and families who may have been exposed to the bacterial infection on campus.
The Fulton County Board of Health stated that the risk to the general school population is low, but they are conducting a standard contact investigation to identify individuals who spent significant time near the infected student. Those identified as close contacts will be offered free testing and preventive treatment. The school is cooperating fully with health officials, and the student is currently receiving medical care and is not attending classes.
Tuberculosis is a serious but treatable disease that primarily affects the lungs. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Health officials emphasize that prolonged, close contact is usually required for transmission. Symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
Parents are being urged to monitor their children for symptoms but are advised not to panic. The school has sent letters home to families, and a public information session may be scheduled to address community concerns. This is the first reported case in the district this academic year.
