Dog stuck in Tampa storm drain rescued, recovering from health issues, Hillsborough officials say

A small shih tzu is on the mend after being pulled from a storm drain in Tampa earlier this week, according to Hillsborough County officials. Animal control officers and local police worked together to free the dog after receiving reports of a canine trapped underground on Monday.

The rescue took place in a residential area, where the dog was found wedged inside the drainage system. Officials did not say how long the animal had been down there, but the dog appeared to be in distress when crews arrived. After the extraction, the shih tzu was taken to a nearby veterinary clinic for a full checkup.

According to a statement from Hillsborough County, the dog is now recovering from several health issues related to the ordeal, including dehydration and minor injuries. The dog is not yet available for adoption, as it remains under medical supervision. Officials have not released the name of the owner or confirmed whether the dog had been reported missing.

The county thanked the responding officers and reminded residents to keep an eye on small pets near storm drains, especially after heavy rain. Anyone with information about the dog's owner is asked to contact Hillsborough County Animal Services. The dog is expected to make a full recovery, though it may take a few more days of rest and treatment.
