Community Walk Raises More Than $116,000 for Mental Health Programs

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held its annual walk fundraiser on Saturday at the Asbury Methodist Church on East Avenue. The event brought together hundreds of participants, including families, local volunteers, and mental health advocates, all working toward a common goal of supporting mental health awareness and services in the region.

Organizers confirmed that the walk raised over $116,000. The money will go toward NAMI programs that offer free support groups, educational classes, and advocacy efforts for people living with mental illness and their families. Several teams formed by local businesses, schools, and church groups took part in the event, many walking in honor of a friend or relative who has faced mental health challenges.

Participants followed a marked route around the neighborhood before returning to the church grounds, where volunteers handed out water and snacks. Speakers at the event shared personal stories about recovery and the importance of community support. Organizers said the turnout exceeded expectations and credited local sponsors and donors for helping push the total past the original goal.

NAMI leaders noted that demand for mental health services has grown in recent years, making fundraisers like this one increasingly important. They said the funds will help keep programs running at no cost to participants. Planning for next year's walk is already underway, and organizers hope to expand the event to include more teams and activities.
