Black Women. Health. Power.: Creating Space for Connection, Community and Collective Calls to Action

This year marked the 55th anniversary of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference. The event brings together policymakers, advocates, organizers, and faith and community leaders in Washington, D.C. to define the priorities of Black communities that require legislative action.

In that same spirit, a dedicated space emerged to focus on a group too often overlooked in policy conversations: Black women. The gathering, titled Black Women. Health. Power., aimed to create room for honest connection and shared purpose. It was not just a panel or a presentation. It was a deliberate effort to build community among those who carry the weight of both racial and gender disparities in health care.

Participants discussed the urgent need for collective calls to action. They talked about maternal mortality, mental health access, and the everyday stress of navigating systems that were not built with them in mind. The conversation centered on power, not as a vague idea, but as the ability to demand better outcomes and hold institutions accountable.

The event underscored a simple truth. Connection is not a luxury. It is a foundation for change. When Black women gather to speak openly about their health and their lives, they create momentum that extends far beyond any single conference room. That momentum is necessary. It is overdue. And it is only the beginning.
