Black Maternal Mental Health Week highlights higher rates of postpartum depression, anxiety among Black mothers

Black Maternal Mental Health Week, observed from July 19 to July 25, is bringing renewed focus to the mental health struggles that disproportionately affect Black mothers during and after pregnancy. Advocates and healthcare professionals are using the week to highlight research showing that Black women experience higher rates of postpartum depression and anxiety compared to their white counterparts, yet they are less likely to receive adequate treatment.

The disparity stems from a combination of factors, including systemic racism in healthcare, lack of culturally competent providers, and the stigma surrounding mental health in some communities. Many Black mothers report feeling dismissed or unheard by medical staff, which can delay diagnosis and intervention. Without proper support, these conditions can worsen, affecting both the mother and her child.

Organizations and community groups are using the week to push for policy changes, increased funding for mental health services, and more training for healthcare workers. They are also promoting peer support networks and therapy options tailored to Black women. The goal is to normalize conversations about maternal mental health and ensure that every mother has access to the care she needs, regardless of race or background.
