Baton Rouge General's Health Tip of the Week: Heat waves may double risk of heart attack

As temperatures climb, the strain on your heart climbs too. Hot weather forces your heart to work harder to cool your body down, and dehydration can thicken your blood, adding extra stress. This combination may double the risk of a heart attack, particularly for people with existing conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

When the body gets too hot, blood vessels near the skin widen to release heat. That makes the heart pump faster and harder. If you are not drinking enough water, your blood volume drops, making it thicker and harder to push through your veins. For someone with narrowed or blocked arteries, that extra effort can trigger a heart attack.

Signs of heat-related heart trouble include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, and lightheadedness. Even if you do not have known heart issues, extreme heat can still be dangerous. Older adults and those on certain medications, like diuretics or beta-blockers, are at higher risk because these drugs can interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature.

To stay safe, drink plenty of water before you feel thirsty. Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day, usually between noon and 4 p.m. Wear loose, light-colored clothing and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning. If you have a chronic condition, check with your doctor about how to adjust your routine during a heat wave. Do not ignore warning signs. If you feel chest pain or pressure, call for help right away.
